The large 3-4" wide, funnel shaped, white flowers are neatly edged in a broad band of contrasting rich reddish-pink and seem to nearly glow against the foil of dark green, medium textured foliage. Flowering is in midspring attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Vibrant Evergreen Azalea, a Harris hybrid, is a rare dwarf with a dense and compact habit that lends itself to bonsai culture but is sure to be a low-maintenance conversation piece in the garden and landscape.  Azaleas do best in average moist, acidic soils that are rich in organic matter but that has good to excellent drainage and should be top dressed with an organic mulch such as pine straw and pine bark. Nearly black buds open to 7" wide scarlet red to deep wine red ruffled flowers with a darker burgundy eye that are produced throughout the summer growing season. Vintage Wine Perennial Hibiscus is a compact well-branched large clump forming perennial with a naturally rounded habit. This is an indeterminate Hardy Hibiscus meaning that they flower all up and down the stems instead of just on the upper half of the plants creating a knockout display in the garden and landscape. Dense flattened clusters of dainty white tubular flowers top the narrow blue-green to green fragrant foliage in summer. The small nectar rich flowers of Virginia Mountain Mint, Pycnanthemum virginianum, attract a wide variety of pollinators, and are especially important to native bees. This is a rhizomatous native perennial that will readily spread especially in moist soils. It is native mainly to the northcentral and northeastern US and is typically found in moist soils but can tolerate drier sites where it is less likely to spread aggressively. Large clusters of lightly fragrant, 1 to 1-1/2" wide, 4-'petaled' white flowers often with light green accents are produced in mid to late summer attracting bees, hummingibirds, and other pollinators. The Virgin's Bower, Clematis virginiana, is a vigorous, deciduous, woody native vine climbing via tendril-like leaf petioles up to about 20' high where it has support. It is deer and rabbit resistant, is adaptable to soil types and moisture levels, as well as sunlight, although, plants grown in sun to part shade may flower more profusely. This is not to be confused with the invasive Sweet Autumn Clematis, Clematis terniflora, which has entire or smooth leaflet edges and the foliage is thick and leathery, whereas, Virgin's Bower, C. virginiana, has toothed leaflets and the foliage tends to be a darker green. Female flowers may be followed by densely 'bearded', long lasting seed heads. Clusters of dainty white and green spring flowers are followed by dense clusters of glossy bright red berries that often last into spring (if the birds don't get them all!). Small, greenish-white flowers are produced in spring just before or as the new foliage emerges and are an important pollen and nectar resource for native bees as well as for honey production. Flowers on female trees are followed by 1 to 1-1/2" long, edible fruits that ripen to lilac or dark purple and drop in the fall. The Water Tupelo, Nyssa aquatica, is a large, native, deciduous tree with a large conical swollen trunk similar to Bald Cypress with gray bark. The tree is adorned in large, glossy, ovate foliage that is reported to provide good yellow fall color. The Water Tupelo prefers consistently wet to moist soils to shallow standing water and full sun is likely optimum, but trees are relatively tolerant of partial shade. Item#13559

1" golden yellow daisies sit atop the dark rich green foliage of this durable groundcover. Drought tolerant once established, Wedelia revels in the heat and sun creating a dense 8-12" high mass of foliage, stems and flowers. Evergreen in mild winter climates but may freeze to the ground in the northern portions of its range. Item# 718.

Not a true Butterfly Bush but a member of the Mint family, Weeping Rostrinucula produces long weeping racemes of lavender-pink flowers in late summer and fall on an arching to upright shrub. This is a dieback perennial in the northern portions of its range where it typically grows into a 3' x 3' shrub or can reach 6' x 6' in milder climates. Item# 10038.

Pyramidal, 6-10" high clusters of small creamy white flowers are produced in mid to late spring attracting a variety of pollinators and are followed by green fruits that ripen to reveal large black seeds covered in a thick translucent yellow to brown tissue that has been utilized as a soap. The Western Soapberry, Sapindus drummondii, is a small to medium-sized, native, deciduous tree with a vase shaped to rounded crown growing to 25-30' high and potentially to 50' high in good quality soils.The medium to deep green pinnately compound foliage provides good yellow fall color and the decorative fruits may remain on the tree into winter. This is a adaptable tree tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions from average moist to dry, acidic to alklaline, and clay to sandy or rocky soils. Bright golden yellow daisies top the sturdy and branched, 3-5' stems of this perennial native Sunflower. The Western Sunflower will quickly create a ground-covering colony of plants by multiplying via underground rhizomes. The spent flower stalks hold seeds for songbirds and will die back to the ground in fall but are quickly replaced by a multitude of new rosettes in winter. The White Bleeding Heart Vine may freeze to the ground in the coldest portions of its range but established plants typically return in the spring.
