Tricolor Superba Camellia

Camellia japonica 'Tricolor Superba'

An RHS Award of Garden Merit selection. The medium to large semi-double flowers are typically variegated in almost random combinations of near white, pink, and red or flowers may be solid white, pink, or red and all flowers sport a tight boss of white pistils tipped with contrasting gold stamens. Flowering occurs in mid to late season or January to April and may attract bees and butterflies on warm winter and spring days. Tricolor Superba Camellia is a large flowered Japonica type with a vigorous rate of growth eventually developing into an upright and rounded densely branching large evergreen shrub to 8-12' high and 6-8' wide. Salvia 'Van Remsen' (S. guaranitica hybrid)

Large intense deep blue flowers emerge from tall spikes beginning in spring and continuing throughout the growing season and into fall. Van Remsen Salvia, an Anise Sage or chance hybrid, is an excellent nectar plant for hummingbirds and may also be visited by larger butterflies. Unlike many of the Salvia guaranitica selections available Van Remsen is a clump forming vigorous growing perennial that can hit 7' high bringing the flowers closer to the hummingbirds and towering over most other garden perennials. This cultivar was discovered in the garden of James Van Remsen of Louisiana and was named and introduced by Salvia guru Richard Dufresne of North Carolina. The spikes of 1" long, creamy white,, two-lipped tubular flowers that emerge from pale yellow buds are produced throughout the growing season attracting hummingbirds, bees, and the occasional butterfly. Vanilla Cream Salvia or Jame Sage, a hybrid selection grouped with Salvia x jamensis, is a compact perennial Salvia growing to about 18-24" high and 12-18" wide that is small enough to enjoy as a low maintenance container plant as well as in a sunny garden or landscape. The glossy, deep green, fragrant foliage acts as the perfect foil for the light colored flowers. Plants may remain evergreen in mild winter climates and are reported to be hardy into zone 7. The large, palmate, tropical-looking, glossy deep green foliage of this Variegated Fatsia is splashed with nicely contrasting bright creamy white making this a standout in shaded gardens. Large loose clusters to 18" or more across are composed of 1" to 1-1/2" diameter, ball-shaped white flowers that are produced in fall to winter attracting an amazing number of mainly smaller pollinators and are followed by 1/4" diameter green berries that ripen to black. Large deep green heart shaped foliage is veined with silver and randomly splotched with maroon and black. The Variegated Monkey Ball Vine is a vigorous but manageable and unusual perennial twining tropical vine that will grow to the height of its support whether 6' or 30' high. Most resources suggest that it is only hardy to zone 10 but we have it in the ground here in zone 8B and it comes back reliably if well-established before cool fall and winter weather sets in. Also known as Ornamental Yam, Dioscorea dodecaneura, it is late to emerge from natural winter dormancy in spring but grows vigorously once it takes off. Clusters of maroon to purple, lightly fragrant flowers are produced in early spring among the newly emerging, beautifully and heavily variegated creamy yellow, bronze, and green new growth that matures to cream, white, and green. The Variegated Five-Leaf Akebia is an adaptable and vigorous, twining, semi-evergreen to deciduous vine with few pest or disease issues. Even though it is variegated it readily tolerates full sun conditions. Provide an average moist, well-drained, fertile soil and is tolerant of periodic drought once fully established. If cross-pollinated by another Akebia with different genetics, such as a seedling or different cultivar of Akebia quinata, it may produce 3-4" long purplish fruit. Hand pollination may be required to ensure good fruit set. The foliage alone is beautiful enough to make this plant worthy of a spot in the garden on a sturdy fence, trellis, or arbor. Item# 12049

2" wide, sweetly fragrant, double white flowers are produced mainly in spring with occasional repeat and are held against a foil of deep green foliage edged in creamy yellow to creamy white. The Variegated Radicans Dwarf Gardenia is a low, mound forming, evergreen shrub slowly building to 1-2' high and about 2' wide making it an easy and low maintenance addition to the garden or landscape. *The plants can tolerate full sun but typically have the deepest green foliage where it receives some shade during the hottest portion of the day particularly in hot summer climates. Provide an acid, fertile, average moist soil with good drainage for optimum vigor and flowering. Rarely available in the nursery trade. Clusters of 3-4" long, tubular, waxy buds open to display the long-lasting starry white wonderfully fragrant flowers that are held against equally beautiful ovate foliage that is edged and randomly splashed in creamy yellow that matures to white and silver as well as often having a silvery overlay. Flowers on and off throughout the warmer months of the year to year-round in warm tropical conditions. Variagated Stephanotis or Madagascar Jasmine, a selection of Stephanotis floribunda, is an evergreen tropical twining vine that makes an easy container plant and is readily trained to small to medium sized trellises although it can climb to 12-15' high where it has a support. This is an old favorite and as Liberty Hyde Bailey states in the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture "is one of the best greenhouse climbers" and "There are few plants that have all the good qualities of S. floribunda. It is a splendid grower, has good foliage, is very free flowering, and the flowers last well on the plant or when cut for decorative work." The deep bluish-green, sword-shaped foliage is broadly edged in starkly contrasting white and creamy white creating a year round splash of color. The Variegated Yucca is an heirloom selection of the native Yucca filamentosa, or Adam's Needle, and develops into an architecturally pleasing, low rounded mass of evergreen foliage on a deer, heat, and drought resistant plant eventually reaching about 2-3'H x 3'W.
